In the original run, I loved Sam. I watched the show primarily for her. Then, years later in reruns, I really started to dislike Sam's attitude the more and more I watched. I think my turning point with Sam was in Sam's Car. Though there are some hysterically funny parts to the episode, it killed me how much of a snob Sam was about the car. Mostly because I drove a "banana boat" as a 16 year old. A 1972 Ford Montego. It was my great grandfather's car. He moved into a nursing home the month I turned 16. Sam is right that I could get 30 of my best friends in the car, but I was happy to have it.
Anyway, last night I watched the Prime version of Sam's Car, and I have to admit, it changed my mind! For you Canadians, they cut the entire scene where Sam parks the car at school and everyone comes out to make fun of her over and over again, taunting her, even the cute boy she likes. Sam tries to defend herself by bringing up the same points Tony brought up (safe and tee, safety!), but she just gets mocked.
So, maybe Sam shouldn't have succumbed to peer pressure. But that missing scene makes it a whole lot easier to forgive her attitude later in the episode. They really cut a lot and changed the whole flavor of it. I'll transcribe it over the weekend but wanted to write it while it was fresh on my mind.
